There are different types of cataracts, and most do develop slowly. However, <\/span><b>posterior subcapsular cataracts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> result in faster deterioration of vision in comparison to the other types. However, they are treatable, thanks to advancements in the field of ophthalmic surgery. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Symptoms of Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be able to observe symptoms within the first few months of their advent.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each eye lens is nested within a lens capsule. It is a membrane or small sac. The capsule ensures that the lens stays in position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regions adjacent to the anterior and posterior capsules are referred as subcapsular regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The posterior subcapsular area is towards the back\/posterior of the lens. Therefore, clouding\/opacification in this part of the lens is called posterior subcapsular cataract.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to other cataracts, the opacity is due to the clumping of protein fibres on the lenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the dense clumping blocks the path of light, you may find difficulty with reading.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are not able to tolerate brilliant sunlight either as this type of cataract leads to greater scattering of light.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bright lights tend to be too glaring or depict halos around them, specifically at night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your eyes feel comfortable with dim illumination only. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4342\" src=\"https:\/\/neoretina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image3.jpg\" alt=\"Posterior subcapsular cataract\" width=\"240\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Figure 1. Posterior subcapsular cataract.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Causes of Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is most at risk for succumbing to this condition?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age is the commonest risk factor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to radiation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes mellitus or other systemic conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overuse of corticosteroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric shock<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sufferers of retinitis pigmentosa, intraocular inflammation\/ uveitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blunt trauma to the eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme nearsightedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who has undergone vitreoretinal surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>How do posterior subcapsular cataracts develop?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire lens of each eye is a mass of fibres and water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fibres comprise of proteins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intelligent and uniform arrangement of lens fibres is responsible for transparency of the lens that allows light to enter the eye and come to a focus on the retina..<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With age and due to other risk factors described above, these fibres become overactive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is new growth below the lens capsules.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since they need their own space, they just scatter the older fibres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, a <\/span><b>cluster<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of new fibres begins to form in the subcapsular region. Phacoemulsification procedure.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Treatment of Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thick glasses or good-quality bifocals may work for a while. You may even try the latest visual aids or prefer to use a magnifying lens. However, do not expect the \u2018good news\u2019 to last for long. You will have to go for surgery! The medical fraternity refers to it as phacoemulsification. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern cataract surgery or phacoemulsification involves usage of an ultrasound probe.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sound emitting from it suffices to break up (emulsify) the cataract.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor removes all the bits and pieces with the aid of a tubing attached to the phaco machine. This suctioning tube behaves like a vacuum cleaner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once\u00a0 the cataractous material within the capsule becomes clean, the surgeon places a foldable intraocular lens into it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire surgery takes about 10 minutes and is most commonly done under topical anaesthesia i.e. no injection no stitch cataract surgery.
